Migraines are recurring headaches causing moderate to severe pain. Those who suffer from migraines tend to experience throbbing or pulsing pain, often starting on one side of the head. You may be sensitive to light and sound, and your migraines may cause nausea and vomiting. They can occur only occasionally or happen several times a month.
Botulinum toxin like (Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin) is now used as a preventative treatment for chronic migraine sufferers. Chronic migraine is defined as headaches on at least fifteen days per month (of which at least eight days are with migraine).
It works by blocking the release of neuro-transmitters that are linked to causing pain. Neuro-transmitters are chemicals that carry nerve impulses. To prevent headaches, Botulinum toxin blocks these signals from reaching the central nervous system and triggering the migraine.
